Yahoo announces support for OpenID!

openidIn an awesome move, Yahoo! has today announced their support for OpenID. What does this mean? That eventually you’ll be able to sign on to more than 9000 OpenID enabled sites using your Yahoo ID AND you’ll be able to sign into Yahoo! using your OpenID, if it’s hosted elsewhere (like at JanRain, for example).

Also, it one fell swoop, Yahoo is tripling the population of OpenID accounts by adding 250 million new accounts. Look for a private beta beginning January 30.

I posted more about this on DownloadSquad.

Also, I’ve covered OpenID plenty before.

37signals adds OpenID sign-on to their products

37signals, a fantastic web based software company, took a huge leap forward today in allowing OpenID as a sign-on option for two of their products, Basecamp and Highrise.

For those of you who don’t know what OpenID is check out my previous coverage and this page on OpenID.  The basic idea is that it is single sign-on for the web.  No seperate login and password for google, yahoo, msn - ONE username and password that YOU control.

I’m glad 37signals is on the bus, once again proving they are a forward thinking company.  I love their key phrase on their blog about OpenID, “Once you go OpenID you won’t go back.”  Very true.

WetPaint hops on the OpenID bandwagon

This is very cool. A great wiki site - wetpaint just added support to sign in using OpenID. I’m very excited about more and more sites adding support for this exciting technology. Single sign-on for the web is one of my major beefs with browsing the web.

It’s not a major site like digg or flickr supporting OpenID - but it’s definitely a step in the right direction. Thanks WetPaint!

web 2.0 quote of the day! hah!

I was reading this guy’s blog and found the following excerpt:

“I exist at Blogger, del.icio.us, Flickr,Facebook,Twitter,Reader, and Dodgeball (update frequency/abandonment rate varies).”

“Update frequency and abandonment rate varies”! That’s classic!

How many times have you made an account to check out a website or web service and abandoned it? for me it’s probably hundreds.

hopefully more sites adopt OpenID soon :)

What I’m presently excited about

There are so many things that excite me in the tech world, but currently my spotlight is on:

  • OpenID - I’m so anxious for some of the big boys to start adopting this single sign-on system. Digg just announced their support of it. Welcome to the club :)
  • GrandCentral - this disruptive technology essentially takes your voicemail box and makes it very similar to email. Route all your calls to this one number and grandcentral takes care of the rest
  • VoIP in general - after going VoIP at home, you realize that talk is cheap and that voice should just be another application that uses the internet to deliver it’s services. At work, we’re putting in a VoIP system and I think people will be really impressed with how VoIP will integrate with the rest of the communications pie. Being able to check voicemails in Outlook? That’ll turn heads.
  • Twitter - this system has been a rockstar at SXSW and across the net lately. People have finally been turned on to the idea of communication in real time with others. I’m having problems though in getting new people to see the value in twitter - especially in my non-techie friends.
  • Gadgets - I still am playing with my new camera, the canon sd800 and playing with all it’s features. I’m so excited about it - the SD800IS is a huge step up from my old Powershot A80. Also I’m still loving my Vizio GV47L - a beautiful TV from Vizio.

AOL’s on the OpenID Bandwagon - Google, hello?!

So looking at an AOL blog - they’re making moves to support hosting OpenIDs.

Clip:

It’s not really a secret that AOL has been experimenting with OpenID.  As I’ve said,
I think that user-centric, interoperable identity is hugely important
to enable the social experiences we’re trying to provide.  This is a
work in progress, but things are coming along thanks to our
authentication team’s diligent effort.  Here’s where we are today:

Every AOL/AIM user now has at least one OpenID URI, http://openid.aol.com/<sn>.

I think Google should as well - what do you all think?

Google should offer OpenIDs

Yahoo has been unofficially dragged into the OpenID space by Simon Willison and his project IDProxy.

Here’s an Idea from the Techcraver to Google - free of charge - you guys should host OpenID’s as a service. This makes sense on multiple levels. It’ll help speed adoption, and many people (such as myself) use Google for services already - so it would blend naturally. And people trust Google. Google could implement OpenIDs in a friendly and easy way, just like the way Apple helped podcasting by incorporating them into iTunes.

Plus Google has always been behind open source and standardized projects, so this might make sense for them to throw their hat into the ring.

So if anyone at Google is reading - please take this into consideration!

Techcraver – now OpenID enabled!

I’ve seen a lot of blog press lately about this new fangled thing called OpenID. An old acquaintance of mine, Scott Kveton, has been passionate about OpenID and is heading up a company called JanRain who is are the forefront of the OpenID movement.

What the heck is OpenID?

Well basically it’s a way to sign on to multiple sites using ONE login/password. In my case – my url is my login. It’s kind of like Passport
which Microsoft was trying to push a long time ago – one login for the web.

Why should I care?

Well how many accounts do you have on the web?

Me, I have hundreds. One on yahoo, one on google, one on every other stinkin site that requires registration. OpenID allows you to use your web address as a login/password combination and the information is kept at one location. Anyone with a domain name
or blog can register and get started with OpenID

Techcraver isn’t the only site that supports OpenID – zooomr.com, jyte.com, and soon yahoo.com will support it. Microsoft just made an announcement that they’re going to make an effort to support it. So OpenID is about to become a very big deal.

So use your OpenID if you want when you leave a comment on
this blog!

I urge all wordpress bloggers look into supporting OpenID on their blogs - if we don’t start using it, how can we expect others to get on the bandwagon?
