If you’re an Amazon Prime member, you’re already used to the idea of getting free 2-day shipping on all your orders or next-day shipping for just $3.99 for an entire order. This $79 per year add-on is worth it for folks who regularly utilize Amazon to get supplies and goods. Well, Amazon Prime has added another bonus for Prime members.

As of yesterday, Amazon Prime members can have a new benefit that allow them to stream Amazon’s library of TV shows and movies. That’s right, Prime members can now stream 5,000 titles in an unlimited fashion instantly to TV sets and DVD players equipped to use Amazon’s streaming service. According to Amazon, there are millions of Amazon Prime members.

The movie and TV show streaming market is heating up. Netflix (the service I use most often) has been building up their streaming library heavily for about two years and boasts around 20,000 items. Also, last week, Redbox confirmed plans to get into the streaming business, which would augment the company’s already cheap $1.00 per day DVD kiosks.

Would you use Amazon over Netflix? For me – Netflix is a huge value at $7 / month and they have a great library that my family uses literally every day.

I’m currently in Toronto, Ontario to be a part of a new ad campaign Nokia is working on. Twelve short films are being created to highlight 8 areas of innovations the company will roll out both in the near future and coming years.

The ubiquitous handset maker is using an interesting approach to the ad campaign centered around engaging and leery stories by pitching them as urban legends. The Nokia Legends, when they debut in the early Fall, are told by a well known actor and story teller and will be the central hub of a web-video campaign.

The actor chosen by Nokia is renowned performer and author Ron McLarty, who has been in roles such as Law and Order, Sex and the City, and many other TV series, as well as a known author who has published 18 novels.

Nokia recognizes that technology marketing is often focused on showing potential users a device that is aimed at specific needs such as SMS, central contact management, email, and so forth. On the other hand, Nokia hopes the Legends campaign will illustrate what is possible by utilizing a more abstract storytelling form that ties together the innovations the company wishes the general public to imagine.

The company is casting a wide net with the stories by using social media to generate a conversation surrounding each of the stories. Being a global company, they’re shooting each video in three languages: English, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese as well.

It has been a real treat to watch the production process. I’ll post more about the videos themselves when they are released in the coming months. In the meantime, check out some of the behind-the-scenes photos I’ve been able to snap.

Garett Rogers of ZDNet posted recently that Google’s Andoid is shedding its allure with developers and therefore won’t be as attractive as an mobile application platform. In turn, Rogers argues, Android-powered phones won’t be as competitive as the newly released iPhone 3G.

My reply is “wait a minute!”. Why? Mainly because Android hasn’t appeared tangibly on any hardware yet. It’s still just a theoretical operating system. Yes, the iPhone and it’s corresponding Application Store are a fantastic package for adopting and consuming mobile applications.

However, studies show that the mobile market will grow increasingly over the next few years. What I’m getting at is there will be plenty of room in the mobile marketplace for numerous players. Just like the personal computing market, those who want a more seemless experience will seek Apple (adopting the iPhone mobile side), business types will seek their corporate-mandated computing environment (looking at Windows Mobile and RIM for the cell phone, and the DIY/geeky crowd will seek another option – perhaps Android is just that.

What makes me believe Android will be a hit in the mobile marketplace? Many factors, including but not limited to:

Google Integration: This mobile OS is going to have deep Google services integration benefiting those who use Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs. Jaiku has an awesome micro-blogging software with built-in presence on the Nokia S60 platform and since then Google has bought Jaiku. Expect some sweet integration with Jaiku into the Android OS. Also, Google has bought GrandCentral, the fantastic VoIP product that provides you one phone number to ring every phone in your life. How can GrandCentral be integrated? I’m not sure, but expect great things.

The Google touch demonstrations: at conferences, the Android demos have been fantastic. See this one for reference:

The (known) present Google applications. Check out the winners from the Google app contest. There are some fantastic applications that stack up against the Apple iPhone applications in usefulness and functionality.

Open-ness. Google Android and Symbian have a factor that is absent from iPhone and it’s App Store. Open-ness. It lacks Apple’s DRM and walled garden approach and might be more attractive to independent software developers.

The International factor: Android and the Open Handset Alliance are going to be able to build attractive handsets powered by a rich and capable operating system. Internationally, this will be a hit in countries that don’t drink the Apple kool-aid like we do in the US.
